Your First Surf Lesson: What to Expect

From the beach to the lineup, step by step

Standing on a surfboard for the first time is one of those moments that rewires your brain. Suddenly the ocean is not just something you look at — it is something you feel, something you move with. But before that magic happens, most people have a cloud of questions swirling in their heads. What do I wear? Will I be terrible? Is it safe? We get it. Every single one of our instructors started as a beginner too.

Before You Hit the Water

Your lesson starts on the sand, not in the surf. You will meet your instructor at Kuta Reef, where the crew will get you fitted with a soft-top board and a rashguard. Soft-tops are wide, buoyant, and forgiving — they are purpose-built for learning. After a short safety briefing covering ocean awareness, right of way, and how to fall safely, you will practice the pop-up on the beach. This is the move that takes you from lying flat to standing, and drilling it on dry land makes everything click faster once the waves start rolling in.

Apply reef-safe sunscreen at least fifteen minutes before your lesson so it has time to absorb. Your face, ears, and the backs of your knees are the spots most people forget.

In the Water

Kuta Reef breaks over a sandy bottom at low-to-mid tide, producing gentle, crumbling whitewater that is ideal for beginners. Your instructor walks into the water with you, positions your board, and literally pushes you into the wave at the right moment. All you have to do is pop up. Most people stand on their very first session — some within the first fifteen minutes. The feeling is hard to describe: a rush of speed, a wobble, a grin that will not leave your face for the rest of the day.

After the Session

Once you are back on the beach, your instructor will walk through what went well and what to focus on next time. If you booked the photo or drone package, you will get your footage sent the same day — perfect for reliving the stoke or making your friends back home jealous. Most guests book their second lesson before they have even toweled off.

I was terrified before my first lesson. Twenty minutes later I was standing on a wave and screaming with joy. Putu made it feel so easy.
